SD Hustle was created in 2007 after I was approached by a few of my high school players expressing interest in continuing to work together throughout the summer and off season. At the time I didn’t know the first thing about travel ball/Club Team sports. But I did know right away what I would name it, I would call it “The Hustle ”. This word was the most used word by my father, Geno Guerra, as well as in the nickname of the player my father modeled me after, “Charlie Hustle”, Pete Rose!
I was never the biggest, fastest or strongest but my Father built a work ethic, a toughness and style of play in me that allowed me to achieve a D1 Scholarship and experience an unforgettable professional career. He taught me to “Hustle”, train hard, slide hard, wear pitches, take balls off the chest and be fearless. I was taught I never had to face a pitcher, a pitcher had to face me! I was taught to play this game with everything I had every time I had the opportunity, I was taught to leave it all on the field and with all my heart I followed my fathers teachings.
I loved being a ball player and all my life that’s what I thought God brought me here to do. But as time went on I found my true calling and passion in life. I realised that teaching this “Hustle” style of play, mentoring and connecting with our youth, creating opportunity and watching these young, amazing souls succeed is what means more to me than anything I have ever done as a player.
I pride ourselves on the players and people we have helped build and will continue to build. We are tough physically and meantally. We are confident and Humble. We are respectful and incredible teammates. Over the years I have been blessed to be able to help 100’s of our players achieve college scholarships, play professional baseball and even make it to the big leagues. I am proud to say that my players carry on these characteristics as they continue onto the next levels of the game but Even prouder to see my players carry these characteristics on in their lives in whatever they do. I would love to see everyone from our program make it to the major leagues but that’s not a reality. However, watching all my players achieve success in life is!
No matter what a person does in life these characteristics will help breed success and there is nothing more fulfilling than seeing my players succeed! Here at SD Hustle we are “Creating Great Athletes but we are creating even better People”.
